Governance

The MECPD is governed by a seven-member board of commissioners, and is comprised as follows:

  • Two commissioners are appointed by The Melrose East Property Owners Association.

  • The Mayor of the Baton Rouge shall appoint one member.

  • The member of the Baton Rouge Council whose district encompasses all or the greater portion of the area of the district shall appoint one member.

  • The member of the Louisiana Senate whose district encompasses all or the greater portion of the area of the district shall appoint one member.

  • The member of the Baton Rouge Tax Assessor whose district encompasses all or the greater portion of the area of the district shall appoint one member.

  • All members shall own property within the district.

The Melrose East Crime Prevention District (MECPD) and its governance structure was approved as R.S. 33:9097.7 and amended as recently as 2024. Louisiana Legislative Session.
